The bill will now be introduced in the Rajya Sabha, possibly on Monday or Tuesday, where it is expected to face difficulties there as several parties is opposing it; its passage in the Lok Sabha was smooth given the big majority the government has in the lower house.

Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad called the “Muslim Women (Protection Of Rights On Marriage) Bill” an attempt to deliver justice and respect for women of muslim, and said that women is not confined to any religion or community.

The Bill has been drafted in the aftermath of the Supreme Court decision in the case of Shayara Bano v. Union of India & Ors., wherein the Court declared the practice of triple talaq as unconstitutional.
