INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL, NEW DELHI

The International Summer School (ISS) is an intensive, six-week academic program that brings together students from across the world over the course of a summer in New Delhi, India. The program is convened annually under the banner of the Government’s acclaimed Incredible India campaign and with support from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

The ISS aims at promoting international goodwill and cross-cultural dialogue amongst promising young individuals, developing their potential as future leaders in government, business and civil society. With India as a study model, it offers undergraduate course modules & experiences which introduce the students to a range of issues & debates that are shaping contemporary developing societies.

Program Structure

The 2018 session will be held from Sunday 24 June to Friday 3 August 2018. The six-week program is divided into two components:

A four-week academic session that is conducted at the Convention Centre in Jawaharlal Nehru University; and

An optional, two-week volunteer and service learning experience that is primarily held outside Delhi/NCR in conjunction with organizations such as WWF-India.

The academic syllabus at the ISS provides an Indian perspective of the following:

Democracy, Governance & International Relations;
Growth, Development & Sustainability;
Society, Culture & Heritage; and
Service Learning.
The aforementioned course modules are supplemented by Seminars on topics that are relevant to the nation and its people as well as Workshops that seek to develop each student’s leadership potential. Students are given the opportunity to interact with eminent speakers who are experts in their respective fields. Visits to sites that showcase India’s rich culture and heritage are also planned throughout the six weeks including excursions to the magnificent Taj Mahal in Agra and the Pink City of Jaipur.

Global Representation

Since 2013, the program has had representation from almost 50 countries. In addition to India, these include Afghanistan, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, Colombia, Denmark, Fiji, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Norway, Palestine, the Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the United Kingdom (UK), the United States of America (USA), Uzbekistan, Vietnam and Yemen.

Institutional Partnerships

Students from past ISS sessions have attended some of the most renowned universities, globally. In fact, the ISS has formal partnerships & associations in place with institutions such as the University of California, the National University of Singapore, the University of Oxford, The University of Tokyo, Singapore Management University, the Asian University for Women in Chittagong, the Royal University of Bhutan and the University of Adelaide. Moreover, entities such as the MEA, the ASEAN Secretariat in Jakarta, the High Commission of India in Bangladesh and the India Bhutan Foundation generously provide their backing to the ISS by way of financial and/or other support.
